Ammonia is a waste product produced by the citizens of your tank as well as the decay of biological material. It is highly toxic, and should never reach detectable levels after cycling. If you can detect ammonia in your tank you should take action immediately. Ammonia in your tank is converted to Nitrite by bacterial action, and eventually to much less harmful Nitrate
